Precedent Setting Prosecution Against Racist Rabbis

Two senior Jerusalem rabbis will face trial for racist incitement after publicly insulting Arabs. Israel's Attorney General Meni Mazuz decided to undertake the precedent-setting prosecution following a police investigation initiated by a complaint from veteran NIF grantee Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) of the Movement for Progressive Judaism in Israel (Reform).

IRAC lodged a complaint with the police after Rabbi David Batzri and his son Rabbi Yitzhak Batzri addressed a rally in Jerusalem in 2006 opposing the establishment of a joint Jewish-Arab school in the city's Pat neighborhood. Rabbi David Batzri told the demonstration that "Arabs were animals who want to take our women." Rabbi Yitzhak Batzri described Arabs as devils and a plague and wondered why God had not created them "to walk on all fours like donkeys."
