Upper Nazareth Mayor Shimon Gapso
NIF grantees Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) and the NIF convened Tag Meir coalition have sent a letter to Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein asking him to investigate Upper Nazareth Mayor Shimon Gapso's use of racist incitement in his reelection campaign. In the letter IRAC attorney Einat Hurvitz cites billboards saying, "Upper Nazareth Jewish forever! No more turning a blind eye. No more embracing the law allowing every citizen to live where he wants. Now is the time to protect our home."
Another billboard ad said, 'I won't allow changing the Jewish character of the city. I will prevent the establishment of an Arab school and work to build neighborhoods for Jewish residents. Any demand to give the city a foreign flavor – will be answered with an absolute no! Upper Nazareth is a Jewish city."
The letter notes that such language violates the Penal Law of 1977 and urges him to commence criminal proceedings.
