Boston New Gen: Israeli Democracy 101 (7:00 pm - 9:00 pm)

This is a New Generations event, intended for people in their 20s and 30s.

In this interactive session, Hechalutz educator Zohar Avigdori will lead participants through a journey that asks what it means for Israel to be a democracy.  Using the life of former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin as our lens, participants will learn about the events leading up to Prime Minister Rabin's assassination.  Going beyond the assassination, we will explore the state of democracy in Israel today, ask what does it mean for Israel to be "the only democracy in the Middle East," and explore the challenges that face democracy in Israel.  Participants will leave the session with a better understanding of the role they play in ensuring that democracy is present in their lives at home and continues to exist at the heart of Israeli society.

Thursday, November 8
7:00 - 9:00 pm

Hosted by Beth Wasserman Badik at her home near
Davis Square, Somerville
(exact address provided upon RSVP)

Zohar Avigdori, 31, is a graduate of the Hanoar Haoved VeHalomed youth movement and a current member of the “Dror Israel” movement.  He is programming coordinator for the Hechalutz educational center, which offers English-language educational experiences for groups of Diaspora Jewry visiting Israel, aimed at such topics as Israeli society, the Kibbutz idea and co-existence.  Zohar is also a youth guide to Poland, a facilitator for a group of Olim from English-speaking countries, and a teacher to at-risk youth, all of which seldom gives him enough time to practice his Yoga and walk his beautiful German Shepherd.

Hechalutz is an Israeli non-profit educational center dedicated to educating Diaspora Jews about Cultural Judaism and Chalutziut (pioneering Zionism). Hechalutz operates within the framework of “HaMeorer”, the Center for Alternative Education. Our goal is to connect Diaspora Jewry to Israel as the center and national home of the Jewish People by educating towards the timeless Zionist ideals of self-determination, collective and personal responsibility, democracy, and justice - the values Israel was founded upon and continues to strive to embody. To this end we run tours, seminars, workshops, Rafsodia (raft sail on the Kinneret) and other educational endeavors.  Hechalutz's style of educating is based on dialogical learning and encourages critical thinking and the challenging of participants' perceptions. All of this takes place in a friendly and informal environment.

Discrimination and racist incitement against Israeli citizens and residents of African descent have made headlines this year.  Join us to learn about NIF grantee Friends by Nature’s unique and successful model for supporting Israel’s Ethiopian youth-at-risk and their families.  Founded by a cohort of likeminded activists—both of Ethiopian descent and not—Friends by Nature – Community Empowerment (FBN) developed the Gedera Community Garin.  A group of families and young adults who choose to live in this town in the Israeli periphery, which faces severe economic and social challenges and is home to a significant Ethiopian population, their mission is to take responsibility for the long-term success of the community, with particular focus on its youth, many of whom are at high risk for school drop-out and falling between the cracks of the social safety net.

This event is being presented in partnership with The Israel Center of the San Francisco based Jewish Community Federation, Hazon, and Camp Tawonga.
