384 Harvard Street
Brookline, MA  02446

There will be a New Gen reception with Stav immediately following the event, for folks in their 20s and 30s.

Last summer’s demonstrations represented a great awakening among middle class Israelis, particularly young people, who poured into the streets by the hundreds of thousands to demand social justice.   The key issues addressed by the protesters include affordable housing; rising water, gas and food prices; difficulty in earning a living wage; access to education; and labor rights.  Stav and other protest leaders are gearing up for a revival of last summer’s demonstrations starting in early June.  Hear from Stav about the movement she helped create, about the prospects for change in Israel, what protest leaders have in store for this summer, and why Israel’s youth hold the key to Israel’s future.

Stav Shaffir, a 27-year-old journalist and social activist, is one of the leaders of the Israeli social protest movement.  She has been featured in Time Magazine, The New York Times, and on the BBC and her columns have been published in Haaretz, Yedioth Aharonot, TheMarker, Ynet, and the Jewish Review of Books. Before the 2011 protest movement was initiated, Stav worked as an editor for Yedioth Aharonot's website.
