Join New Generations at the Moishe House for an evening of interactive learning as we explore these and other issues with Ari Levy of Hechalutz. Hechalutz is a non-profit Israeli education center dedicated to teaching Cultural Judaism and Zionism to Diaspora Jews. Hechalutz connects Diaspora Jewry to Israel by educating towards Zionist ideals of self-determination, collective and personal responsibility, democracy and justice. The center's style of education is based on dialogical learning and encourages critical thinking and the challenging of perception.

 Come for the conversation and leave with a better understanding of what religious pluralism looks like in Israel, and what the role of the American Jewish community is in ensuring that religious freedom continues to exist at the heart of Israeli society.

On January 22, Israelis will make their voices heard at their election polls.  In the run-up to the election, the debate about the serious and difficult issues confronting the country has been and will continue to be robust and contentious.  Here, in the American Jewish community (and in our own Atlanta community – as evidenced by the recent exclusion of Peter Beinart from a community event), the debate about Israel is becoming increasingly polarized, and at the same time increasingly constrained.

We invite you to join us for the first of what we hope will be many open conversations dealing with questions such as:

What responsibility do Diaspora Jews have towards Israel, and what limitations – if any – should there be on our critique of the country’s policies?

How do Jewish values inform our approach to Israel?  Should Israel’s social justice challenges be important to us as American Jews?

How do these issues impact the American Jewish community’s relationship with Israel, and specifically, the younger generation of America Jewry?

How can we dialogue on these issues given the strong differences of opinion that exist, and how we can come together under common cause–a love for Israel and concern for her future?

Please join HIAS, Right Now: Advocates for African Asylum Seekers in Israel, New Israel Fund, and Rabbis for Human Rights-North America for a discussion about asylum seekers in Israel – who they are, how the Jewish state is responding, and how American Jewish communities can get involved. The event will feature a short documentary film, as well as remarks from experts Mark Hetfield, HIAS’ President and CEO (interim), and Maya Paley, co-founder of Right Now. Presentations will be followed by a Q&A session.
