[Portland, OR] The Crisis Of Israeli Democracy: How It Broke, How To Fix It (7:15 pm)
The Crisis of Israeli Democracy: How it broke, How to Fix It
Special presentation by Israeli/American author Gershom Gorenberg followed by book-signing. Gorenberg’s most recent book, The Unmaking of Israel (Harper Collins 2011) is both deeply personal and a thoroughly researched study of the disproportionate influence that religion is excercising in Israel, dividing the country into entrenched factions. This influence has the potential to cause great damage to the future of Israel as a democracy and to a future Jewish state that respects all Jewish denominations and other faiths.
When: Saturday, February 16th 7:30 PM (7:15 Havdalah)
Where: Congregation Neveh Shalom (2900 Southwest Peaceful Lane, Portland)
Please RSVP

A Discussion for New Generations (people in their 20s and 30s) with Dr. Sara Hirschhorn.
Harvard Hillel 52 Mount Auburn Street Cambridge, MA
This event is co-sponsored by the Progressive Jewish Alliance.
Please join us for learning and conversation as Dr. Sara Hirschhorn leads us through an overview of the political scene in Israel. Who are Israel's left wing and right wing, and what do they want? What is their understanding of religion, democracy and the rule of law in Israel? What do the results of the recent elections tell us about the priorities of Israel's citizens, and what do they suggest about the future?
Dr. Sara Hirschhorn was born and raised in Western Massachusetts while spending considerable amounts of time in Israel throughout her childhood. She graduated with honors from Yale University and received her M.A. in Middle East Studies from the University of Chicago. Sara recently earned her doctorate in History at the University of Chicago, where she wrote her dissertation entitled “City on a Hilltop: The participation of Jewish-American Immigrants within the Israeli Settler Movement, 1967-1987.” Sara is currently a postdoctoral fellowship at the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis University, where her research focuses on the Israeli ultra-nationalist movement, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the relationship between the U.S./American Jewry and Israel. She is also a regular op-ed contributor to Haaretz, The Times of Israel, and the Israeli conflict resolution webzine Efshar Lahshov (CanThink).

[NY] Purim Uncensored: The WHOLE Megillah (7:00 pm - 9:00 pm)
You’re invited to join NIF – New Generations, J Street NYC – Young Professionals Network, and Congregation Beth Elohim’s Brooklyn Jews for a satirical Purim Spiel, as we are transported back to the world of Ancient Persia away from the sweetness of the Purim fairy tale we’ve come to know. The holiday of Purim and its legend of Esther is not just for kids. The Megillah reveals a complex and morally twisted parable for the Jewish people, fraught with sexual innuendo, espionage, and, ultimately, genocide. This year, New York and London-based theater puppeteer Randy Ginsburg will present a shadow puppet performance of the Whole Megillah, unpacking the story's intricacies and moral dilemmas to bring the lessons of this ancient tale to modern day Israel.
RSVP HERE! When: Thursday, February 21, 7pm - 9pm Where: The Ballroom at Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place, Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY Cost: 14$ in advance, $18 at the door; includes wine and snacks

*This event is intended for people in their 20s and 30s. The New Israel Fund has frequent events open to all age ranges in February and beyond. Partners:
