After a two-year public struggle, State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss confirmed the land sale deal of the contested Palmachim Beach site was indeed problematic.  He then called on the Attorney General to investigate the sale and planning process.  This is a critical turning point in the struggle to prevent the building of a 350-room resort on the public beach, an unspoiled, secluded gem between Tel Aviv and Ashdod.  The SHATIL-advised campaign was begun by a local 18-year-old and garnered widespread public support.

Lindenstrauss's decision, in which he praised the environmental activists, is an inspiration to activists conducting similar struggles around the country.

According to the Environmental Protection Ministry, in 1948, every Israeli citizen had an average of 31 cm. of beach at his/her disposal.  Today the number has shrunk to 2.5 cm. per person.
