This Passover, one foreign worker has been delivered from slavery to freedom thanks to an NIF grantee. On April 2nd, the Jerusalem District Court ordered an Israeli couple to pay a foreign worker for 10 years of unpaid work as well as an additional year's pay as compensation for the distress caused. Michal Tadjer, an attorney for NIF grantee Kav LaOved – Worker's Hotline which took up the foreign worker's case, explained that the worker was employed one day a week for ten years performing housework for Amos and Sigal Ephraim. While the Ephraims arranged for her to have a work permit, she received no payment. After they fired her last year, she went to Kav LaOved and was surprised to discover that the Ephraims had been illegally exploiting her. The Court also ordered the Ephraims to pay $2,500 in legal costs, which will be transferred to Kav LaOved. |
