Yesterday, at an historical rally in downtown Tel Aviv, 20,000 African migrants and refugees gathered to protest harsh new laws aimed at their status in Israel.

The proposed bill which passed today with the support of eight ministers should really be called the 'Law to Eliminate Freedom of Opinion and Expression in Israel'. It amounts to serious damage to Israeli democracy. Therefore, those for whom Israel is important need to come out against this bill, in exactly the same way that the Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein has announced that he will not defend this unacceptable law before the Supreme Court.

New Israel Fund-Supported Groups Win Key Court Victory for African Refugees16 September 2013
Washington DC: A landmark victory for human rights was won in Israel today when an expanded panel of the Supreme Court invalidated the Third Amendment to the Anti-Infiltration Law passed by the Knesset in 2012, which incarcerated more than 2000 African refugees without due process or recourse to the possibility of asylum.

Many Israelis - including members of the current government - have used the word “apartheid” in reference to the discrimination and segregation imposed in the occupied territories. The New Israel Fund does not use this word as we find it inflammatory and inaccurate. NIF does not support Israel Apartheid Week nor do we believe that it makes a positive contribution to the debate.
