Goals

To improve the status of women and increase their participation in all spheres of life in Umm al-Fahm.

Background

The al-Anwar association was established in 2000 at the initiative of a group of Umm al-Fahm women active in welfare, education, healthcare and the community. Its representatives launched a project called "al-Bashir" to run daycare centers and preschools so that women can go to work and/or to school.

In 2006, the Association extended its focus to the general status of women in Umm al-Fahm.

Strategies

Consciousness-raising and individual and economic empowerment.

Highlights

  • Organized a conference on the physical and mental health of Arab women in Israel.
  • Held a symposium to assist high school students in deciding about their future academic studies.
  • Held two symposia to raise women's awareness of their rights.
  • Ran a 12-session leadership course for  women in cooperation with the Authority to Promote the Status of Women.
  • Opened a multidisciplinary daycare center (meitar) for children at risk.
  • Organized a business entrepreneurship project for women in cooperation with Economic Empowerment for Women.
