Al-Syndianah Association

GOALS
To support empowerment activities and leadership courses for Arab women in the Old City of Acre.

BACKGROUND
The old town of Acre has approximately 6,000 Arab residents. A large percentage of the population suffers from problems such as poverty, unemployment and drugs, and girls and women have become the victims of violence and neglect. Al-Syndianah was founded in 1994 by several socially involved women residents of the old town to ensure the establishment of essential social frameworks for the Arab population of Acre.

STRATEGIES

Advocating for service provision; running the services after they have been established; running a daycare center and preschool recognized by the Ministries of Education and Social Welfare; and running a moadonit for  disadvantaged young Arab women ages 13–18 in cooperation with Acre's welfare department.

HIGHLIGHTS

Won agreement from the city of Acre to open a center with a warm, homelike atmosphere for women and teenage girls in cooperation with the municipality. The municipality will rent a building in the old town, equip and furnish it, and provide the organization with a social worker and psychologist. The organization will develop and run empowerment and leadership-development programs.
