GOALS Promoting the rights of women who are victims of the legal system's religious laws.
BACKGROUND In Israel, laws relating to personal status are the laws of halacha, which sometimes place basic human rights in conflict with some aspects of Jewish law, particularly in cases of divorce. The woman in divorce proceedings is dependant upon the husband's consent and very often is a victim of extortion by the husband, who manages to achieve various concessions in the divorce settlement. The Center for Women's Justice was founded in 2004 in order to help women, chiefly agunot and mesora'vot get.
STRATEGIES Legal advocacy, promoting legislation, legal research and public education.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Damage suits in family court – Due to the organization's intervention, a precedent-setting ruling was given imposing a large fine on a husband who refused to grant a get in spite of rabbinical ruling. Four more cases are in process.
- Four cases in rabbinical courts handled by the organization resulted in divorces being granted. Seven cases are in process.
- Serving as "friend of the court" in a petition to the Supreme Court by a woman who was ordered by the rabbinical court to pay her husband money for a get.
- Publications on the Internet and in the press. Interviews on radio and TV.
