In a time of growing uncertainty in the relations of the Arab world and Israel, some 100 Arab and Jewish Israelis came together in the fifth annual Workplace Dialogue Conference where they focused on the recently published "Palestinian Vision" paper. The paper, written by a group of Arab Israeli scholars and social activists, attempts to define a vision for the future of Israeli-Arab society and the state of Israel. Referring to the dual identify of Israeli Arabs, Aida Tuma Suleiman, the first and only woman member of the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee and a contributor to the vision paper said: "We want to preserve our belonging to the Arab world and to the whole world community, but at the same time we give great importance to our political choice to be Israeli citizens. As an outcome of this choice we are saying that we would like to change the rules of the game -- we are no longer waiting for others to tell us what they want from us. We are deciding what we want for ourselves."
The June 13th conference was co-sponsored by SHATIL, the Zofnat Institute, the Swiss Center for Conflict Studies at the Hebrew University, New Horizon and the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies. |
