The Bush Administration took office promising to avoid the intense Middle East diplomacy that characterized the Clinton Administration, particularly during its last year in office. However, Secretary of State Rice has now shuttled to Israel and the Palestinian Territories more than any of her predecessors; this week, she undertook her seventh visit since the November 2007 Annapolis meeting and the 20th visit of her tenure as Secretary of State. And, with the many other crises on her agenda – Russia/Georgia, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – even those who appreciate the importance of addressing the Palestinian-Israeli conflict with pro-active US diplomacy wonder whether Rice’s persistence reflects a skewed sense of priorities.
