With NIF’s senior staff at our winter board meeting in New York, we asked Hagai El-Ad, executive director of NIF flagship grantee the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, to contribute to this week’s NIF News.

As my friends and colleagues on NIF's board are convening in New York, I was given the honor of writing this NIF News introduction. So first let me start by wishing from Tel Aviv to everyone a most successful meeting – NIF's leadership and optimism are indeed essential factors of our joint struggle for democracy, human rights and social justice.

Cabinet Approves Higher Taxes for Israel’s Gas Tycoons

The Israel cabinet has approved the Sheshinski Committee’s recommendations to raise the royalties on Israel’s gas fields from 33 to 55-65 percent. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that most of the extra billions of dollars collected by the government will be allocated to education.

NIF Grantees Attack “Jews Only” Kosher Certificates for Employers

The right wing organization Lahava has added a new dimension to the growing tide of racism in Israel by saying it will issue kashrut (kosher)certificates to businesses that employ only Jews. The organization has already designed the certificate which says, “This is to certify that the business employs Jewish workers and does not employ enemies.”

Kiryat Shmona Receives Fair Fans Award

The fans of Israeli soccer team Hapoel Kiryat Shmona have been awarded the NIF prize for the fairest fans in the first half of the 2010/2011 season. The award was presented in a televised pre-match ceremony in January.

Homeless in Lod – Demolition Update: January 2011

We haven’t been going to school much over the last six weeks – our clothes and our schoolbooks were destroyed when our homes were demolished.”

Thus spoke the four young cousins, Nur, Kamal, Muhammed and Roiya, who came to Jerusalem on Friday with their families, neighbors and friends to protest the demolitions of their homes and demonstrate their solidarity with families evicted from East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
