We at the New Israel Fund are deeply – sometimes obsessively – involved in and dedicated to our work.  For us, and that includes the thousands of you who support NIF, the task of working for equality and democracy for all Israelis is far more than a job or an activist pursuit:  it is a critically important mission, almost a sacred one.  But every once in a while, something happens that provides a new sense of perspective.  This past Friday was one of those days.

Oscar Stars Can Stay in Israel – For Now

The stars of the film "Strangers No More," which won an Oscar last month for the best Short Documentary, can stay in Israel for now. Interior Minister Eli Yishai has ruled that the deportation of some 200 migrant children who are already in school, and whose parents are working in Israel without permits will be delayed until the summer.

NIF Organizes First- Ever Action Week for the Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Sports

The first-ever action week for "Access and Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Sport," which was held in Israel earlier this month had major impact.

Initiated by NIF and CAFE – Centre for Access to Football in Europe, and organized in partnership with the Israel Football Association, NIF grantee Access Israel and other disability NGOs, the week's events raised public awareness about the rights of disabled people and their entitlement to enjoy sports like all citizens.

NIF Board Member Named One of World's 100 Most Influential Women

NIF Board Member Nabila Espanioly has been chosen as one of the world's 100 most influential women by Women Deliver – Invest in Women, a global advocacy organization headquartered in New York, which campaigns against maternal death.

To mark International Women's Day, Women Deliver said, "The 100 honorees were selected from among hundreds of potentials and feature some of the most intrepid, committed, and results-driven people in the world."

International Women’s Day Protesting Lod Demolitions

International Women’s Day was marked in Lod by some four hundred Arabs and Jews who gathered at Lod Municipality City Hall to protest the continuing demolition of Arab homes. “The situation we’re in has given Arab women the strength to go out into the streets and stand up for their rights.” said Buthaina Dabit, director of SHATIL's Mixed Cities project, who played a leading role in bringing together activists from the Lod Popular Committee, Hutwa, Amnesty International Israel, Community Advocacy, Naam, Physicians for Human Rights, Rabbis for Human Rights, The Association for Civil Rights in Israel, Tarabut-Hithabrut, Solidarity-Sheikh Jarrah and other groups and organizations.

Behind the scenes at the Social Workers' Strike

"We're tired of being social slaves." "With this meager (aluv) salary, we'll fight like in Libya (Luv)." These and other rhyming slogans, which were composed at a SHATIL training aimed at turning social workers into social change agents, featured prominently in the nationwide demonstrations by striking social workers as well as in press coverage of the protests.
