Famous Brazilian Musicians Honor NIF and Israeli-Palestinian Peace-Workers

6 August 2015

Last week, internationally renowned Brazilian musicians and noted political activists Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso came to Israel for a sold-out concert at the Nokia Arena. The duo used their visit to support organizations in Israel that work towards peace, human rights, and a shared society.

The day before their concert, they met with 120 activists, organization heads, artists, and public figures as well as members of the international press at an event in Tel Aviv put on by the New Israel Fund and the Alternative Center for Bilingual Education.

Talia Sasson, President of the New Israel Fund, welcomed the guests of honor. “What connects two artists of this caliber to the New Israel Fund,” she said, “is our shared faith in democracy, social justice, peace, and equality. These principles stem from a deep belief in the activities of the peace and shared society organizations in Israel that stand here today and resolutely promote these principles every day.”

Wajih Tmaiza, the Chairman of NIF grantee the Parents Circle-Families Forum also spoke. He shared the heart wrenching story about the death of his brother in 1991 and then two of his nephews in a 2001 settler attack and how that pushed him to become an activist for peace.

The musicians were obviously deeply touched by his speech. Veloso, who spoke next, talked about their visit that day to the village of Sussiya and called for an end to occupation, repression, and segregation. He ended his comments with a beautiful Brazilian song about the hidden beauty of human connections, which he dedicated to Wajih. (See below for a clip from NIF Israel’s Facebook page.)

Mira Awad, the well-known Israeli-Palestinian singer and actress, hosted the evening. She and David Broza closed the program with a powerful joint performance in Hebrew and Arabic of Broza’s song “In My Heart.”
