[NY] Benghazi Bergen-Belsen

April 2 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

An epic romance retrieves the lost story of the Holocaust of Libyan Jews in “Benghazi Bergen-Belsen,” a play by Lahav Timor. The play is inspired by the Brenner-Prize winning 2016 novel of the same name by NIF board member Yossi Sucary. Sucary’s novel is the first book about Jews in World War II Libya. The play is translated from Hebrew by Inbal Timor and directed by Michal Gamily.

Set between 1941-1945, when the Nazi holocaust turned onto the Jews of Libya, the novel, and the play, give voice to an aspect that is profoundly absent from the prevailing stories of the Jewish Holocaust. “Benghazi Bergen-Belsen” is narrated through the voice of Silvana Hajaj, an ambitious young Jewish feminist from Benghazi, Libya. Silvana is transported with her family to the Bergen-Belsen, Germany concentration camp, where she meets Rebecca, a young Dutch Jew. Tracking their interaction, the play is fraught with cultural and sexual tensions. After being caught stealing water, Silvana and Rebecca are locked in a shack where they must decide which one of them shall be executed within an hour. Rebecca asks Silvana to use her last minutes to tell the story of her family from Benghazi in North Africa to Bergen-Belsen, Nazi Germany.
