Combating Homophobia in Jerusalem

13 June 2019

In the lead up to Jerusalem Pride, which was held on June 6, a far-right group put up homophobic ads against LGBTQ rights and same-sex marriage around the city.

The posters, which were paid for by Hazon, a religious extremist group, showed the slogan “Father and Mother = Family. The courage to be normal.” They were put up in mostly secular neighborhoods in Jerusalem, just days before the Jerusalem LGBTQ community’s annual Pride parade.

Rabbi Noa Sattath, director of the NIF-funded Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC), condemned the posters as “incitement,” telling Channel 12 news that the extremists are “against anyone who does not hold their dark and violent worldview. We will continue to fight for justice and equality.”

After the outcry, the Jerusalem municipality ordered the removal of the posters.
