On Saturday, February 24th, 20,000 people turned out in Tel Aviv. They came out for a powerful demonstration that was a statement for people seeking refuge in Israel and for everyone who lives in south Tel Aviv. Our Vice President of Public Engagement Libby Lenkinski hosted a livestream of the evening.
Tel Aviv demo for people seeking asylum
The turnout for Saturday night’s demonstration in Tel Aviv was so incredible that the cell phone towers could not handle our live stream. Fortunately, we’ve got the footage!
Watch the feed from the demonstration against the deportations and for reviving the neighborhood. Our Vice President of Public Engagement Libby Lenkinski interviews Israeli human rights activists, people seeking asylum, and others.

The decision to locate the protest on Levinsky Street, in the heart of south Tel Aviv, was significant. While many demonstrations take place further north, at Rabin square, this choice showed solidarity with people seeking asylum and everyone living in south Tel Aviv.

Israelis turned out en masse in a way that was unprecedented.
If my math is correct, this is the equivalent of a million people coming to a demonstration in US! This is the Israel I love! https://t.co/ie4lFMYDNo

20 אלף איש!
20 אלף, שהגיעו ממציאויות שונות והתאחדו למען מציאות אחת. אמת אחת.

Israelis see the deportation and the situation in south Tel Aviv as crossing a line. Here’s NIF Executive Director in Israel Mickey Gitzin from the demonstration: “Saying no to the deportations is the most Israeli thing to do.”

An outpouring of Israelis across professions, ages, and interests came together at this rally. Listen to three high school students from Gymnasia Herzliya who have been organizing in support of people seeking asylum: “This country is going to be ours as adults in a few years – we’re going to change things.”

Many of the people who organized the demonstration and gathered in support of it work at our grantee organizations. We are so proud of people like Sapir from the Association for Civil Rights in Israel. She was one of the organizers of Saturday’s protest: “We’re not going to continue to let [the government] fight against us, we’re going to unite all of us and fight against them.”

Both Israelis and people seeking refuge turned out en masse for this protest. Hear what Mutasim Ali, the first Darfurian to gain refugee status in Israel, has to say about the huge outpouring of support at last night’s protest: “This is something we’ve been waiting for for years – I am so hopeful.”
