Last week, NIF rabbinic and cantoral fellows in Los Angeles hosted the annual Elissa Froman Memorial Lecture which, this year, featured Eran Nissan, Executive Director of NIF grantee Mehazkim. Local rabbis, cantors, rabbinical school students, faculty, and staff gathered to learn from Eran about the strategies he has been implementing via Mehazkim as well as the Citizens’ HQ during this whirlwind moment in Israeli politics. He also spoke about threats and opportunities ingrowing the progressive Israel movement in the near-, mid-, and long-term. Rabbi Laura Geller deserves a special thanks for making space in her home for this packed-house event!
The lecture caps an incredible year of learning and relationship building for NIF’s rabbinic and cantorial fellows. NIF’s Elissa Froman Social Change Fellowship, created by Eugene and Janet Lerner Family Foundation, provides a unique opportunity for future rabbis and cantors to engage in deep learning about social issues in Israel. NIF staff lead two cohorts of fellows, one in Israel and one in LA, in a survey of our grantees’ work, from human rights and democracy to religious freedom, social and economic justice, and beyond.
The application for next year’s fellowship will go live in June. If you or someone you know is interested in applying or have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected].
