Providing Humanitarian Aid for Gaza

3 June 2021

In the wake of last month’s fighting between Israel and Hamas, NIF grantee Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) has mobilized to help ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) delivered medicines and medical equipment funded by private donors from Israel and worldwide. The medical assistance was delivered in accordance with requests from hospitals and the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip and was carried out in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO).

In addition, PHRI sent 1,500 food packages which were distributed in recent days to thousands of Palestinian families whose homes were damaged and destroyed in the war. Many of the recipients were forced to leave their homes for fear of injury and took shelter in schools and hospitals.

The money was raised swiftly, largely among Palestinians in Israel and transferred to the Gaza Strip, where teams helped with preparation and distribution. This is the first effort by PHRI since the Gaza escalation. PHRI expects to undertake similar efforts in the coming weeks.

Bridge the Divide logoJewish-Arab partnership is critical to Israel’s moral fabric, to its democratic future, and any hope of Israel fulfilling its founding vision — one based on equality for all Israelis and Palestinians. That has been a focus of our work for decades. But this moment of crisis demands more of us.
