Another step forward for women’s equality! On July 28, the Knesset passed an amendment to the Equal Pay Law that will enable women who are paid less than men to be compensated not only for financial damages incurred, but for the very existence of gender-based wage discrimination. The amendment also provides a host of protective measures for female employees who bring charges of wage discrimination against their employers. The law was written and promoted by the Israel Women’s Network, SHATIL’s partner in the Equal Pay Project. The legislation was the result of collaborative work with a coalition of – mostly women – MKs from the right and left. MK Aliza Lavie (Yesh Atid) sponsored the legislation.
“We anticipate that this legislation will be another step in removing barriers to women filing legal claims and will help create a deterrent effect for employers,” said Equal Pay Project Coordinator Tamar Adelstein
The Equal Pay Project is a partnership between SHATIL, the Israel Women’s Network, Adva and the government’s Equality Commission.
